Abandoned Paws Rescue started when a group of friends got tired of seeing helpless animals get euthanized because there was no room for them at the shelters. Since then, Paws has grown into a much larger rescue. Taking all dogs that need a new home. Since the creation of Abandoned Paws, we have saved countless dogs. All of our animals become part of our Paws family. We take each adoption seriously and personally. Each of our animals hold a special place in our hearts.

From the moment a dog becomes part of our rescue, we put them through our APR adoption program. The first step includes a personality assessment, this is perhaps the most important step as it sets the pace for the future of the animal. This is 24 hour observation where we can learn about our dogs, what makes them unique and how we can nurture and care for them. The next step includes health care. Here we get them up-to-date on all shots and vaccines, get the animal spayed or neutered, and get any additional healthcare that they might need. Next is finding their foster home. We find a perfect match for our dogs to our volunteers. Here is where the dog gets some additional training. They get used to a home environment, which makes them more adaptable when they become adopted. Last is our favorite step of all, FINDING A FUREVER HOME. We screen each potential furever home to ensure our animals will be well cared for and loved. We provided our new pet parents with information about their newest member, vet records, and training tips.

All of our volunteers love working with these beautiful animals. We are passionate about saving dogs lives and are always looking for new animals that need a second chance. However, our dogs require more than just love. Our dogs have an adoption fee that helps contribute to their vet and food bills. Every dog that gets adopted, gives us a chance to save another life.

Puppies for Parole is a unique program made possible through our partnership with the Missouri Department of Correction at the Farmington Correctional Center. Selected offenders have the opportunity to become trainers to rescue dogs in the program. Offenders work with the dogs teaching them basic obedience skills and properly socializing the animals, making them more adoptable. Dogs then have the opportunity to get adopted after their 8 week of training.

The benefits of this program are three-fold. Puppies for Parole gives offenders the skills necessary to support successful rehabilitation, reentry, ultimately improving public safety. At the same time, this is an opportunity for the offenders to re-pay Missouri communities and repair some of the debts caused by their crimes. We have seen this program have a profound effect on the inmates and staff, increasing the safety and security of the facility.

“The dogs have a remarkable impact on MDOC offenders, improving offender behavior and giving offenders incentive to maintain excellent conduct records. Offenders not directly involved in the program are showing responsibility and selflessness by donating to support our efforts. Staff morale is also enhanced by the presence of the dogs.”  George A. Lombardi, Director
